“Capture the Flag” WP CTF

100 International Students put their Cybersecurity Skills to the test in Bozen/Bolzano

For the fourth time, the “Capture the Flag” WP CTF brought together young IT talents from around the world, fostering international exchange and sending a strong signal for promoting young talent and cybersecurity in South Tyrol.

A day full of challenges

On November 29, more than 100 students from Italy and Austria participated in the 4th edition of the WP CTF, a Capture the Flag competition that supports young talents in cybersecurity while showcasing Bozen/Bolzano as a hub of international IT expertise.

“Cybersecurity affects everyone – businesses, public institutions, and private citizens alike,” says Georg Kostner, Head of Cyber Defence Center at the Würth Group. “With the WP CTF, we aim to engage young people with this crucial topic while promoting international exchange.”

Participants tackled hands-on IT challenges in Web Security, Cryptography, Reverse Engineering, and Forensics. Beyond technical skills, teamwork, networking, and international collaboration were key aspects of the event.

The Winning Teams of 2025

The top teams stood out for their technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong teamwork:

  • 1st place: Tower of Hanoi – Politecnico di Milano
  • 2nd place: LosFuzzys – Technische Universität Graz
  • 3rd place: Hackinpovo – Università di Trento

Why the WP CTF matters for South Tyrol

Today, cybersecurity is a central topic for both the economy and society – including in South Tyrol. Companies urgently need qualified professionals. The WP CTF provides young talents with the opportunity to apply their knowledge practically and prepare for the demands of the modern IT world.

Bolzano has established itself as an international meeting point for young IT experts through this event. Each year, the competition attracts students from multiple countries: in 2025, teams from Italy and Austria participated; in previous years, Greece, Germany, and the Netherlands were also represented. This international visibility strengthens Bolzano as an innovation hub in the Alpine region.

A core focus is supporting the next generation of IT professionals. Students from universities such as Bolzano, Trento, Verona, Bari, Milan, or Graz were able to make contacts, learn from one another, and develop their skills. The WP CTF also strengthens South Tyrol’s innovation ecosystem by allowing young talents to tackle real cybersecurity challenges and make digital competence visible in the region.

Supported by partners

The WP CTF is supported by regional and international partners, including:

  • Südtiroler Volksbank AG/Banca Popolare dell’Alto Adige Spa
  • Innova from Trieste
  • Alpitronic
  • Gravitate Ltd from Nuremberg
  • HGV Südtirol
  • Longo Media, and
  • Würth Italia.

These collaborations highlight the growing importance of digital security for both the economy and society.

About WP CTF

The WP CTF is an annual cybersecurity competition for students, organized by Würth IT Italy. Its goal is to provide young IT talents with hands-on security challenges, strengthen their skills, and foster exchange between universities, businesses, and the IT community.

The challenges participants tackle are developed by Würth IT Italy itself, reflecting the company’s strong cybersecurity expertise. They cover Web Security, Reverse Engineering, Cryptography, and Forensics, designed to be both practical and complex.

Congratulations to all participants for their exceptional efforts and to the winning teams for their brilliant performances. And shoutout to everyone for making this event exceptional. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
